「仮想」と聞くと、かなり前のことですが、日本IBMでシステムズエンジニアをしていた方が「virtualを仮想と誤訳した責任は我々にあります」と反省の弁を述べたことを思い出します。米IBMがvirtual memoryを発表した時、日本IBMが仮想記憶と翻訳しました。virtualの意味は「事実上の」「実質的」ですから、virtual memoryとは「本来のメモリーではないが事実上メモリーとして使える技術」を指します。ところが、仮想記憶と訳したため、実体がない想像上のメモリーという印象を与えてしまい、しかもそれ以後virtualという言葉が出て来ると必ず「仮想」と訳されるようになりました。同氏が「もっといい訳にしておけば」と悔やむ所以です。
